International relationship therapy
(main language: English)

Who is it for?

  • Couples from different cultural backgrounds or nationalities who are experiencing difficulties in their relationship, want to communicate better and feel more connected.

  • Couples with one or both partners residing abroad (outside Belgium) who want to start a remote counseling.

How do I work?

We maintain the sessions as short as possible (coaching), and as long as necessary (therapy).

My approach focuses strongly on obtaining a better (self)understanding from each of the two partners regarding the problem you are facing together, including both your cultural contexts. These can create an additional layer in the relationship, and explicitly or covertly influence your mutual understanding and connection. In counseling, we always start from the question at hand, but we also take into account the relational values, needs and differences in the relationship through a broader cultural lens. In this sense, our counseling is comprehensive and multifaceted.

Our counseling program consists of the following steps:

  • We start off with an initial conversation to get an impression of who you are as a person or as a couple, and get a first feel of the relationship. I also prefer to have one individual conversation with each partner. We will also identify and address the differences in background and origin.

  • Subsequently we formulate a common goal to work toward. In the following process we incorporate exercises and conversations aimed at improving connection, dynamics and communication. We name and interpret cultural differences to give them a place.
During this phase I meet with you both as a couple, preferably every 3 weeks. The counseling continues until the set goals are achieved, and you feel ready to move on independently.

How do we define international relationship therapy?

In this program I focus strongly on:

    • Interpersonal communication and forms of interaction

    • Dealing with emotions, and the cultural (gender) patterns that could be of influence.
    • Strengthening different forms of intimacy, while being mindful of the cultural sensitivities that may come into play.

    • Developing mutual understanding and empathy for each other's values and beliefs, and space for each person's cultural identity.

    • Learning to deal with each other's differences.
    • Breaking unhealthy relationship patterns, such as chase-flight or separation anxiety vs. bonding anxiety.

    • Teaching conflict recovery.

    • Rebuilding trust after infidelity.

    • Conflict mediation to prevent - or facilitate - divorce.
